In this overview on bird toys you will find different types of bird toys, some tips on making bird toys yourself and what materials that should be avoided when making these. But first a bit of information as to why your birds need bird toys.

Why Do Birds Need Toys?

Birds have a few basic needs that they all need consisting of drinking water, eating food, getting attention and playing with toys. In the wild birds are mentally stimulated by searching for food. They often have to go through loads of trouble to find it, but it’s all good. Birds enjoy being busy and playing around. A caged bird always gets his food without doing much work, which can make them feel really bored. As a result birds can become very frustrated because they have nothing to do.

This isn’t the only reason why birds need bird toys. A bird’s beak can become overgrown when he doesn’t have to use his beak much. Bird toys really are a must as they are stimulated both physically and mentally and they keep your bird’s beak trimmed.

Different Types Of Bird Toys

There are a few different kinds of bird toys out there which stimulate your bird in diverse ways. Some toys require their intelligence, physical output or keeping their selves pretty and healthy. Here’s the list:

  • Puzzle Toys: A puzzle toy that when solved, gives the bird a treat.
  • Exercise Toys: Toys which encourage your bird to swing, climb and hang.
  • Grasp Toys: These toys need to be held in their claws, which stimulated “hand” exercising.
  • Chewing Toys: Your bird will shred through these, used to keep the bird’s beak trim.
  • Preening Toys: When preening toys, birds will essentially preen themselves as well which results in healthy feathers.

As I outlined earlier all these different types of bird toys stimulate and keep them healthy in various ways. They need to solve puzzles to earn a treat, they can exercise with toys, keep their beak trim and encourage them to preen themselves.

Making Bird Toys Yourself

Bird toys are expensive. Some birds really shred through their toys like they are nothing, even with high quality bird toys. A good idea to keep the costs down is to make the bird toys yourself. There are a lot of ways to make bird toys and not every bird likes the same toy. Here are three cheap bird toys that you can make yourself

1.    Wrap a treat in a paper towel and tie both ends.
2.    Use a clean cloth glove as a piata.
3.    Take a piece of paper towel roll and put a treat inside it and crimp both ends.

Be sure to avoid materials as zinc, lead, nickel, rubber and soft plastic. These are very dangerous to your bird as they can give metal poisoning. A good metal to use is stainless steel. Most natural materials are fine, but if you are not sure do a search on it.
