The Beauty and Durability of Teak Furniture
56Teak hardwood is grown in the rain forests of Malaysia, India and Thailand. This popular, expensive wood is often used in any variety of indoor or outdoor pieces including chairs, bedroom sets, dinning tables, end tables and TV stands. Wood made into new teak furniture reflects the typical satiny smooth, honey color that is so durable and beautiful.
Identification
Once you develop an eye for spotting the dense, tight, smooth grain you will notice it on several pieces as you shop. It is quite popular, sturdy and is a fine wood for crafting into beautiful, long lasting pieces. Additional characteristic include no splintering and a pleasant light fragrance produced from the oils in this type of wood.
It can be stained with color if that is of interest, but most people prefer the natural honey color, which is preserved by sealing. If allowed to age with exposure from the weather it changes to a silver-gray color, which is also appealing for outdoor tables and chairs.

Teak Furniture Care
Well maintained living room, dinning room and bedroom items may only require wiping down with a clean, damp cloth and buffed to a shine using a dry cloth. If tougher cleaning is required you can use a soft-bristled brush scrubbing gently with mild soap and warm water. Stay away from any other cleaning materials that could scratch or stain it. If the item is heavily encrusted with dirt or stained the cleaning process should be repeated.
To keep the honey color, you should apply a protective coat of tung or teak oil about every three months or so. Use a soft cloth as an applicator and allow coats to thoroughly dry in between. Brighteners can be used on indoor teak furniture, which enhances the grain and pretty color, as well as some store brands that will also clean.
